Personal data are all around us. Within the European Union (EU), the law has recognized that the use of personal data creates problems, and therefore offers protection, for example via the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The GDPR is however often considered as tedious and difficult. In my talk I want to demonstrate that the GDPR offers important protection to our constitutional rights, while also giving us options to take back control of our personal data.

What are the latest innovations in autocrats’ censorship toolkit? Are big tech companies enabling authoritarian control? And which initiatives have grassroots dissidents launched to foster a safe and inclusive civic space? This talk will unpack these inter-connected topics by highlighting global examples as well as unique cases from Southeast Asia, a largely authoritarian region that is witnessing rapid growth in digital industry.
